Indian freedom struggle was possible only because our A-List leaders were supported by the masses led by a very dedicated support team of fierce freedom fighters. Freedom fighters at the fore-front of the freedom struggle got their due, but those who slogged hard behind the scenes were never recognised or given credit for the successful transformation of our nation from the British rule to an independent nation. So, here we take a look at some of those heroes who were the main protagonists behind the freedom movement
Svarkar was a great orator, prolific writer, historian, poet, philosopher and social worker who founded the “Abhinav Bharat Society”. He was also involved in the Swadeshi Movement and wrote a book titled “The Indian War Of Independence 1857”. He was imprisoned in Andaman Cellular Jail when he tried to escape from London via Marseilles.
Aurobindo Ghosh was an Indian Civil Servant and received his education in the UK. He was prosecuted for spreading sedition through Vande Mataram, a paper that he published. Later on in his life, he migrated to French Pondicherry and set up a centre there.
Ashfaqulla Khan was hanged for his involvement in the Kakori Dacoity incident. He was the first Muslim to embrace death on the gallows for his country. He worked directly under Ram Prasad Bismil and wanted to study engineering abroad but was betrayed by his friend by disclosing his whereabouts.
KM Munshi was a lawyer, creative writer, constitution-maker, freedom fighter, administrator, organization-builder and a propagator of Indian culture. Post-independence, he served the government in various capacities.
Laxmi Segal was the captain of all women Rani of Jhansi regiment of INA. She was really inspired by Gandhi and Bose. She still inspires a lot of women to join the army and is regarded as the pioneer of women’s issues in the army.
Rani Saroj Gaurihar hails from a well-read family, her father being a prominent lawyer who fought the court cases of various freedom fighters. She herself graduated with a degree of law and also got a diploma on Public Administration later on. After independence, she was also an MLA in Madhya Pradesh.
K E Mammen was in the prison cell when Jawahar Lal Nehru gave that speech in independent India. He was moved by the radical ideas of Subhash Chandra Bose and considered Captain Laxmi as his idol.
Shyam Lal Gupt was a patriotic poet who wrote the famous song “Vijaya vishwa tiranga pyara, Jhanda Uncha rahe hamara” on the commemoration day of Jayaliwalan Bagh Diwas.
Balappa, who was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s Quit India movement, was one of the brave soldiers in the fight against the British. He, along with some of his friends, took down the office of the district court complex in Bavatagudda by firing a crude bomb.

Sarma’s rebellion to the British rule was most felt from 1939 to 1942. Sarma retired as a chief personnel officer of a state run fertilizer plant. He is said to be one of the most vocal voices on corruption in India post-independence.

Jatindra Nath Das was a part of the Non-violence movement started by Gandhi and also a member of Anushilan Samiti. Das was a motivated foot soldier of the freedom movement who did not fear death. He staged a hunger strike for 63 days in Lahore jail and died there which stunned the entire nation.
